SPOILER ALERT!

Where the Red Fern Grows

Where the Red Fern Grows - Wilson Rawls One of the worst book I've ever read. And this is a child's book? I know that there are some children's books that need to be read as a child; as a grown up is just not the same. But this book is definitely not a children's book.

To name some things I hated: Billy, the main character, was not only obnoxious but supposedly "nice" as well. When he cannot get the dogs he wanted, he manipulates his mother by not eating and getting sick. The add he kept for the dogs remains the same for 2 years. Yeah, right, same price, same dogs after 2 years?

There is also a lot of cruelty against animals. Yes, the dogs are hunter dogs, but that does not mean hunting is good. Billy kills a coon with a club... a club! I cannot imagine more cruelty than that. Besides enjoying killing animals, he also kills a beautiful tree, "because he does not want to let his dogs down". WOW, this kid is the biggest criminal or what, and people enjoy reading this??

Then the death incident. Don't let me start with the Grandpa, who is one of the most irresponsible adults I've ever read... and he is supposed to be responsible AND the best Grandpa in the world. And he asks Billy to use the ax that was the cause of death of a child!

Billy mentions his sisters in such an impersonal way. There are no names or ways to differentiate them; it is always "my sisters", "my oldest sister", etc. This bothered me a lot.

The end "I guess" is a way to make this book a classic, but it was so boring and not moving at all. I hated this book in the beginning, in the middle, and at the end. I cannot say one single good thing about this book. And this is a classic??
